Dedicated to my spouse, Robert Lynn, Proxemics for unaccompanied cello was constructed using slightly modified 12-tone matrices.  It was an assignment during my masters degree work: Warren Gooch’s valiant effort toward getting me to embrace dissonance.  I hated the assignment, but understood that it was exactly what I needed at the time.  Ironically, it is now one of my favorite compositions.  The ever-shifting quasi-tonal centers, and lack of meter makes this a tremendously difficult piece, so it is not likely to be performed often.  In addition, it is basically a study in double-stops — especially the 2nd movement.  I’m sure Robert called me many bad names while practicing.  Fortunately, our marriage has survived the ordeal.
